Season Under Way with First Pre-Season Game

The season officially started today when the Harlequins travelled to Stoney Creek to take on the Camels.  With several new faces, 3 subs and playing 4 twenty minute quarters the Quins started slow but built as the day went on.  The camels starting many of there Marshall 1st team and came out strong by scoring 3 tries in the first 20.  After a short break and some adjustments the Quins started to find there game.  2nd quarter Camels score 3, Quins 1.  A few more adjustments and now the team starts to roll and scores 4 tries in the 3rd.  It was an great display of rugby for a team that has not worked together at all.  In the fourth the Camels outscored the Quins 2 - 1 for a final tally of 8 - 6 for the Camels.  "I was impressed on how the boys adapted to the game in each quarter and that they never quit.  I got to see some new faces and old ones that have improved over the off season.  I'm excited for this year"   said coach Knowles.  The next action is this weekend with a strong field coming to the Brantford Cash Tournament.
New Revitalized Cash Tournament This Weekend

This weekend you might get a glimpse of what some of the top teams in Ontario may have to offer this season.   The quality and level of the teams that are scheduled to compete this weekend may be the highest this tournament has ever offered.  With last years McCormick Cup champions Aurora Barbarians and the team they beat in the final Balmy Beach ready to compete it already makes this years cash tournament very strong.  Add in a trial team for the Niagara Thunder of the Rugby Canada Super league as well as the Marshall team Toronto Nomads and the tournament field is strong.  One other team from the Keenan division, Markham joins the Harlequins in what looks to be a great day of rugby.  The Second division will have three teams competing and a women's game as well.  This years tournament is a  must see so if your free, even for a couple of hours, come on out and support your Harlequins.  The Tournament starts at 10am with the Harlequins squaring off against the Niagara Thunder.
Several Harlequins attended Niagara Thunder's Legends of Rugby Fundraising Dinner on Friday night.  Harlequins president Dave Goodrow, Head Coach Dave Knowles and players Steve Piatek and Adam Schouten enjoyed an evening of fine food and entertainment from Mike James.  With 57 caps for Canada this former captain entertain about 100 people.  The evening was enjoyed by all.
Harlequins have Good Showing at Cash Tournament

The Harlequins entered their second week of preseason knowing that they would be in for a tough day.  The Harlequins cash tournament boasted a strong field with the Quins being pooled with the Niagara Thunder developmental team and Balmy Beach.   The Quins kicked of the day facing the Niagara Thunder.  In the early going the Quins were under alot of pressure but the defense held strong.  The Thunder scored once before half time to lead 5 - 0 but all the momentum was with the Quins.   In the second half the Quins put alot of pressure on the Thunder squad which boasted the likes of Canadian prop Mike Pletch.  Quins took the lead 7-5 before the Thunder put in a late try to take the win 10-7.  The Quins then took on the Beach and after a feeling out period early the Quins slowly started to dominate the game winning 24-12.  In the Bronze medal match the Quins were in tough against the McCormick cup champions, Aurora Barbarians.  With many of the Quins back line choosing to sit and rest injuries there was an impressive performance put on by the Quins reserves who helped seal the win with a 17-12 performance.  Many thanks to all the players including the Norfolk Harvester who helped fill out our second team rooster in what was a very successful day.  In a side note, two of the youngest and newest Quins, Rory and Hugh MacDonell, played for and impressed the Thunder coaches as the Thunder took the Cash Tournament title and the $500 cash prize.   For all the scores please visit the tournament section of this web site.
The Quins would also like to thank all the fans that come out to support the them.  It was great to hear the cheers every time the Quins moved the ball.  Next week Kingston is in town and with a little family rivalry between Barclay Luke and his nephew, it should make for another great day.
